Tumba College of Technology organized a stakeholders’ workshop on Electronics and Telecommunication (ET),
this workshop was meant to provide a forum for participatory involvement of industries and stakeholders in reshaping the department of Electronics and Telecommunication curriculum to reflect the industry needs as well
as understand the recent development on Electronics and Telecommunication at Tumba College of Technology
Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is a forum where industries related to the field i.e. ET meets together and discuss technical ways forward and to have an output that matches the industry needs with regards to the economic development of the country, during this third workshop that took place at Hotel Mille Collins on 28th October 2010 the main objectives were to expose the activities of TCT- ET department and search industry needs to reflect to ET curriculum.
The program of the workshop was composed of some presentation of the TCT and ET department activities, JICA TCT Project activities, a public seminar on the topic of “Introduction to “Industrial Automation” Through Microcontroller Subject in Tumba College of Technology”, students’ technical exhibition on various topics, and group discussion in search for collaboration between the industries and TCT.
The Principal of Tumba College of Technology Eng. GATABAZI Pascal presented the vision of TCT that is to be a model institution and a leading technical education center in the area of science and technology. Talking about TCT’s mission, he said that it is to produce competent hands on skills technicians using high quality practical education and to contribute to industries and ultimately economic development of the country. He disclosed some of the objectives that TCT is to achieve: world class school facilities, ensuring academic quality, conducting cutting edge R&D, enhancement of income generation activities as well as putting in place student’s carrier support systems and build strong relations with industry, academic institution and community.
Also present was Mr. NISHIYAMA Ruichi, the Project Chief Advisor of JICA-TCT. The main objective of the Project is to strengthen the capacity of TCT through, not only academic technical skills but also administrative strength. He explained that in order to strengthen the technical capacity of the ET department, the Project employs a good cooperation with the Electronic Engineering Polytechnics Institute of Surabaya (EEPIS), by sending the TCT teachers to Indonesia, and also receiving experts from EEPIS. The fruit of such cooperation is exhibited as students’ exhibition on this workshop day.
Mr. Jean Pierre, Head of Department of ET department then explained its curriculum and also explained the current situation of our first batch graduates, who graduated only in December 2009. According to the survey conducted over telephone, 72 percent of our ET graduates are working either in private or public institutions/companies.
Mr. Anang from a prominent Electronic Engineering Polytechnics Institute of Surabaya (EEPIS), who support TCT as a JICA short-term expert, gave a public seminar on the topic of “International trends of manufacturing automation based on micro-controllers”. He explained different ways of application of micro controller, he disclosed that Micro Controller can be used in several appliances like home, health, telecommunication, smart cards, industries…however he mentioned that Micro Controller can be used at Tumba College of Technology to carry out some of the projects like water level control, tele monitoring, temperature control, dryer machine and plant monitoring.
Addressing the participants, a representative from Private sector Federation (PSF) Mr. MANZI Antoine recommended all companies to address the needs to the training providers since there is a need of training so that to match the market output; industries attendance were fifty eight while thirty two participants was from Tumba College of Technology
The participants commented that they enjoyed the interaction with the TCT-ET students through the technical exhibition. Some participants mentioned that TCT’s education is appreciated that the technical skills taught at TCT is useful for the industries.
The last program of the day, group discussion, revealed that TCT need to build closer technical relationship with the industries. Understanding that there is much need of trainings and research collaboration from the industries, TCT is determined to strive to meet the requirements from the industries.
