The department of Electronics and Telecommunication was established as one of the academic departments of Tumba College of Technology at her inception in 2007 as Communications Technology department. In February 2008 after some changes in the department’s curriculum following The Stakeholders TAG meeting, the Department was renamed Electronics and Telecommunication. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is an instrument of the College by which she relates with Industry and Professionals stakeholders in the field to update her curricula and keep it industry relevant.

The Department started with an initial intake of 50 students in August 2007 for the A1 (diploma) programme in Communication Technology (now Electronics and Telecommunication).

This initial intake were drawn from candidates who were from Technical Schools (Ecole Technique Ordinal) with A2 qualifications in (Electrical and Electronics), and candidates who were from ESOs (Ecole Secondaire Ordinal) with A2 qualifications in Sciences (Maths/Physics). Presently more students coming for intake into the departments come from the ESOs

Tumba College of Technology as Higher level institution, is under the supervision of Rwanda Ministry of Education and is affiliated to Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), thus her programmes including the programmes of the department of Electronics and Telecommunication conform to the standards set by the Rwanda National Council for Higher Education and are recognized in the country and region.

The department continuously keeps her programmes and curricula up-to-date and relevant through the activities Technical Advisory Group (TAG).

The department also continues to train and re-train its personnel in both traditional academic and industry based programs in order to keep abreast with the rapidly changing world.
